Fundraiser for the Red Cross

At the 2019 Christmas tour, a fundraiser was made to the Red Cross's relief operations in the world of disasters, partly through a self-collection from the Glenn Miller Orchestra on the Red Cross website, partly through a special  Swish-number (Sweden), VIPPS-number (Norway) and partly through cash. We can now report that this fundraiser brought in a total of SEK 18,514 (approx. US $ 1,737). Our goal was significantly higher. However, the Red Cross would like to thank the Glenn Miller Orchestra most sincerely for our efforts and you for your contributions.

LIBERTY! THE MUSIC THAT UNITED THE WORLD!

In 2015, we will hold memorial peace after World War II, 70 years, and the importance of Glenn Miller´s music in context. No other music probably had the same unifying function at the corresponding time.

Even after 70 years Glenn Miller´s musical arrangements are still heard around the world.

Glenn made up his mind after the Pearl Harbour attack that he would apply for duty. It took him many months of convincing the military higher-ups that he could modernize the army bands and ultimately improve the morale of the men. His training complete, he was transferred into the Army Air Corps, where he ultimately organized the Army Air Force Orchestra. After repeated requests, Miller received permission to take the band overseas and in June 1944 the Miller sound was heard "live" in Britain.

In less than one year, Glenn Miller and the American Band of the Allied Expeditionary Force were engaged in over 800 performances. Of these, 500 were broadcasts heard by millions. There were more than 300 personal appearances including concerts and dances, with a gross attendance of over 600,000.

In summarizing Miller's military career, General Jimmy Doolittle said, ‘next to a letter from home, Glenn Miller´s organization was the greatest morale builder in the European Theater of Operations’.
